How Does DampRid Work and Are There Alternatives? The Mistakes That Cost the Most

DampRid works by deliquescence: calcium chloride crystals, CaCl2 in the National Library of Medicine PubChem record (molecular weight 110.98 g/mol), pull water vapor from still air until the salt dissolves into brine that drips into a reservoir. W.M. Barr's FG01K refillable tub is labeled 10.5 oz (297 g), 78 percent calcium chloride, for spaces up to 250 square feet, lasting up to 45 days depending on temperature and humidity. That charge is finite and has no fan. A portable electric dehumidifier rated about 20 pints per day under the U.S. Department of Energy's 65°F and 60 percent relative humidity test (10 CFR Appendix X1, the ENERGY STAR procedure since 2020) removes more water in a day than one tub holds over its whole life. Activated charcoal, including DampRid's own Odor Genie, is sold to capture odor and, on the company's FAQ, "does not remove excess moisture." Ice-melt pellets that share the same salt are labeled for ice melting, not indoor moisture absorption, and are not interchangeable refills.

The expensive errors cluster there: treating every calcium chloride bag as a DampRid refill, parking a tub in a wet basement as if it were a compressor, hanging charcoal and calling the moisture problem solved.

How does DampRid work?

Calcium chloride is a hygroscopic, deliquescent salt. PubChem describes it as highly soluble in water and deliquescent: solid crystals take up vapor until they become a liquid. Occidental Chemical's calcium chloride handbook says the same. Solid product left open will clump, then go wet, then go liquid.

W.M. Barr puts that salt in a two-chamber tub. The FG01K refillable moisture absorber holds 10.5 oz (297 g) of crystals. The retail label lists calcium chloride at 78 percent, with 22 percent other ingredients. The company's FG01K safety data sheet lists calcium chloride in a range of 70.0 to 100.0 percent, plus sodium chloride under 3 percent and potassium chloride under 3 percent. The label figure is the one printed for the consumer fill; the SDS is the wider manufacturing range. Composition does not set how much water a given tub will hold.

The Home Depot specification sheet for FG01K rates that 10.5 oz charge for spaces up to 250 square feet and up to 45 days, "depending on temperature and humidity." A 42 oz refill pouch is sold as four of those charges. A 15.4 oz hanging absorber is labeled 15.4 oz (436 g) and "lasts up to 60 days." The Mega refillable is sold as a 5 lb crystal charge lasting up to six months. None of those packages prints a pint-per-day water-removal rate. That number lives on electric dehumidifiers.

Why does liquid collect in the bottom of the tub?

The liquid is brine. DampRid's product guide describes the sequence. Excess moisture is absorbed into the white crystals. The crystals harden. After days or weeks, liquid drips into the lower chamber. When the crystals are gone, the tub is spent.

The company's Easy-Fill FAQ is blunt about timing. Liquid may not appear for a few days or even a week. Moisture is held in the crystals first. W.M. Barr tells users not to empty the collected liquid before the crystals have dissolved, because that brine "will continue to absorb a small amount of moisture."

The FG01K directions say to pour the liquid into the toilet when it reaches the full line, then refill or discard the empty container in the trash. The same label says the product will not harm septic systems.

W.M. Barr does not print a fluid-ounce brine capacity on the FG01K tub. The stop point is the molded full line. A trade listing for the FG01K pail (DK Hardware, model FG01FFESB) gives exterior dimensions of 4.70 by 4.70 by 4.94 inches for the whole container, crystal basket included. That is the box, not a published reservoir volume. DampRid has said salt solution on metal for a long period will corrode, and on leather it leaves the hide hard and wrinkled.

Brine in the tub means the salt took up vapor. The room can still be wet.

How much space can one tub actually dry?

The FG01K label talks in square feet. Moisture load lives in cubic feet, relative humidity, and temperature. Measure length, width, and height of the closed space. A closet 3 feet by 2 feet by 8 feet is 48 cubic feet. A bathroom 5 feet by 8 feet by 8 feet is 320 cubic feet. A 250-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling is 2,000 cubic feet. The same 10.5 oz charge is being asked to serve a closet and a small apartment's worth of air.

The EPA-accepted master label (EPA Registration Number 4091-15) says the product "works most efficiently in closed areas" that stay that way for long periods, including closets and vehicles in storage, and that effectiveness "will be compromised in well ventilated spaces."

Relative humidity and temperature decide how fast the crystals spend themselves. The EPA's A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home tells occupants to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and notes that a humidity meter at a hardware store often costs $10 to $50. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (National Center for Environmental Health, updated September 26, 2024) sets a harder ceiling: keep humidity "as low as you can — no higher than 50% — all day long," and check more than once a day. Those two federal numbers do not match. EPA allows a band that includes 50 to 60 percent; CDC does not.

The Department of Energy's dehumidifier test, which ENERGY STAR uses, is run at 65°F dry-bulb and 60 percent relative humidity for portable units. DampRid does not publish a paired temperature and humidity for its "up to 45 days" claim. A closed RV at 80°F and 70 percent RH is a different vapor load than a 65°F basement.

Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., ASHRAE Fellow and a principal of Building Science Corporation, put the rule in a 2010 Building Science Insight: "Mold is a water problem. No water, no mold." In his moisture-control digest for new houses he writes that growth is a practical risk where relative humidity adjacent to surfaces stays above 70 percent. Ambient RH on a cheap hygrometer and RH at a cold closet wall are not the same measurement.

One passive absorber has no powered air movement and no condensate pump. W.M. Barr's tips page states the product "does not absorb standing water, only moisture from the air." It cannot correct a wet basement, an active leak, or high outdoor-air infiltration.

Is a powered dehumidifier a better alternative than DampRid?

For a moisture load that keeps relative humidity above the CDC or EPA band, a compressor dehumidifier is the tool rated in water removed per day. ENERGY STAR's dehumidifier testing page records that portable units are now tested at 65°F rather than 80°F, "to more accurately reflect expected performance in a basement setting." Under that 2020 procedure, a unit formerly labeled 30 pints per day at 80°F is listed as about 20 pints per day. Consumer Reports tests water removal at 65°F and 60 percent relative humidity, the same pair.

DampRid does not publish a pint-per-day equivalent. Independent calcium chloride capacity claims disagree, because they are not FG01K tests. Occidental Chemical's PELADOW DG gas-drying literature says the salt, passing from solid to liquid, "can absorb more than 3.5 times its weight in water" in natural-gas service. Shipping-desiccant makers such as SUPER DRY advertise up to 200 to 300 percent of dry weight. Those figures were not measured on a 10.5 oz DampRid tub. Applied only as an order of magnitude to the 8.2 oz of calcium chloride in a 78 percent, 10.5 oz fill (0.78 × 10.5 oz), a 3.5-times factor would be about 29 oz of water for the whole life of the charge, not per day. A 20-pint dehumidifier at the DOE rating is roughly 20 pounds of water in one rated day.

A search summary that lists a dehumidifier and charcoal as alternatives is mixing two jobs. The dehumidifier competes with DampRid on water. Charcoal treats a different problem.

Does activated charcoal replace DampRid?

No. DampRid's Odor Genie FAQ is the cleanest primary source. "The Odor Genie combines a solid gel with a layer of activated charcoal to continuously absorb stubborn odors from the air, but does not remove excess moisture." A following answer repeats it: the product "does not absorb moisture." Black specks in some DampRid disposables are charcoal for odor, not extra drying power. Charcoal can take a musty smell down while relative humidity stays high enough for mold on a cold wall. The EPA mold guide's first rule is moisture control. CDC says the same: if mold is growing, clean it up and fix the moisture problem.

Why ice melt, cat litter, and silica gel fail as cheap DampRid refills

The dominant cheap advice is to pour driveway ice melt into the empty DampRid tub. Calcium chloride is the overlap. The products are not interchangeable.

Occidental Chemical's PELADOW Premier Snow and Ice Melter SDS states the product use as ice melting. Composition is calcium chloride greater than 90 and less than 92 percent, with water, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride. Heat is generated when the pellets mix with water. SiteOne's PELADOW consumer directions warn against storing the product in an attic or on an upper floor "where leaking of liquid brine contents could cause damage," and against contact with leather. That 50-pound pavement bag has no indoor reservoir, no full line, and no EPA indoor mildewstatic label.

DampRid's EPA-accepted label opens with the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act line: it is a violation of federal law to use the product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. The registered product is the labeled moisture absorber, EPA Reg. No. 4091-15. Ice melt is not that labeled product. Pouring it into a decorative tub creates an unlabeled brine generator, including whatever additives that bag happened to include.

Cat litter migrates in from spill cleanup. Clumping clay is sold to take up liquid on contact. Crystal "silica" litter is silica gel aimed at urine, not a published water-vapor removal rate. Absorbency after a puddle hits the pan is not a pint-per-day rating.

Silica gel is a real desiccant. Merck's drying-agents literature (Sigma-Aldrich) states that silica gel adsorbs 20 percent of its own weight at 25°C and 80 percent relative humidity. SorbentSystems' equilibrium table at 77°F (25°C) lists silica gel at 34.1 percent of weight at 80 percent RH and 26.6 percent at 50 percent RH. Those two laboratory sources disagree on the 80 percent figure. Neither is a hanging DampRid bag. Silica gel stays solid; it does not deliquesce into a brine reservoir.

How do you empty, refill, or throw away a full DampRid container?

The FG01K label is the procedure. When liquid reaches the full line, open the lid and pour the liquid into the toilet. If the tub will be reused, fill with the matching DampRid refill, stopping about an inch from the top on the 42 oz bag directions. If it will not be reused, discard the empty container in the trash. Do not put a tub still full of brine into household garbage.

Hanging bags with Moisture-Lock covers are discarded when the white crystals are gone, or when a Moisture-Lock indicator reaches the printed arrow, depending on the pack. DampRid's disposable-product FAQ says not to cut the protective cover to empty liquid, and admits the cover is spill-resistant, not spill-proof.

Keep the tub on a level surface, out of reach of children and pets. The label forbids use in moving vehicles. First aid on the hanging-bag label includes flushing eyes for 15 minutes and calling Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if the product is ingested.

When is the moisture source too large — or in a material you should not disturb?

A hygrometer that stays above 50 percent (CDC) or 60 percent (EPA's outer limit) after a tub has gone to brine is a load the salt cannot finish. Look for the water: a plumbing drip, a shower without an outdoor-venting fan, a sweating window, an RV roof seam, a closet on a cold exterior wall. EPA and CDC both say to dry wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. A 45-day tub is not that clock.

In rental stock built when textured coatings and 9-inch vinyl floor tile were still ordinary, the musty closet has a second trap. The Consumer Product Safety Commission restricted asbestos in consumer patching compounds in 1977. The EPA banned spray-applied asbestos surfacing materials under the Clean Air Act's asbestos NESHAP in 1973. Inventory still went onto ceilings into the early 1980s. A popcorn or stippled ceiling from those years is a survey question. Intact texture that is not being sanded is the low-disturbance path both EPA and CPSC describe.

People who book those surveys start with the year the building went up, because the fashionable finish on a ceiling is a date stamp. The tub on the closet floor does not change that date.

Fix the leak. Vent the shower. Size a dehumidifier to the cubic footage and to a 65°F, 60 percent RH rating if the space stays wet. Leave the pre-1980 texture alone until someone licensed has a sample result. The salt in the tub will keep making brine until it runs out. That was never the whole job.
